GP lost 10 stone as example to patients

A SUPER-SLIMMING GP lost almost half her body weight to scoop an award.
Dr Arabella Onslow, a GP from Kirkby, has scooped the Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness Magazine Health Professional Slimmer of the Year 2012 Award.
The 41-year-old shed a massive 10 stone with the help of the Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness Club in Ulverston.
She now weighs just 11st 10lb and wears a dress size 12 for the first time in more than 20 years. Before shedding the weight. Dr Onslow used to weigh 21st 10lb and wear a size 26.
She managed to shed three stone before taking the plunge to join the slimming club in August 2010.
The new lean and healthy doctor, a GP at the Market Street Medical Practice in Dalton, says she feels she is finally giving a positive message to her patients. She said: “As a GP you listen to patients with all sorts of problems and, of course, not all of them are connected with weight, but a lot can be, like breathlessness, bad joints and diabetes. So when I had to tell a patient they would benefit from losing weight I felt they were judging me.”
Dr Onslow had spent 20 years piling on the pounds due to her enormous portion sizes, fatty snacks and the lavish fat-laden meals she would prepare.
When she became a respite foster parent to two children she was concerned about the example she was setting them.
She said: “I would cook them huge meals and everything revolved around food.”
The GP also began to suffer the effects of her overeating.
She said: “I couldn’t sit down comfortably, my knees ached, I developed sciatica and at one point I needed an extra seat belt extension on a flight.”
The super-slimmer added: “If someone had told me when I first started that it would take just a little more than a year to transform my life, I would never have believed them. The support and guidance I received proved invaluable.
“I don’t feel that people are judging me any more. I have a responsibility to set an example to my patients.
“I keep a picture of the ‘old’ me on my desk so I can show them that if I can do it, they can too. I’ve changed my life for the better and I hope I can help others change theirs too.”
She received her award – along with £1,000 cash – from Rosemary Conley, CBE, at a glittering ceremony held at the London Marriott County Hall Hotel yesterday.
