Kirkby Literary Society

The Kirkby Literary Society meets on the first Monday of the month from October to March in Beckside Rooms at 7.30 pm and has an Annual Dinner in April at some suitable local hostelry.

The next meeting is on February 1st at 7.30 pm in Beckside Rooms When Rene Herail will read some of her poetry and discuss the subject "Can Poetry keep a Poet?".

The fourth meeting of the season took place on a very cold, snowy and frosty January 4th 2010 and was attended by only 5 brave souls and the lecturer, Jack Rice from Ulverston. He had replaced the original speaker and gave the hardy five a most interesting talk on an expedition to the Himalayas which he had undertaken some years previously. It was a pity that so many members had to miss it due to the weather and the state of the roads.

The meeting on December 7th was well attended and members read a wide variety of items -some of their favourite things- to the assembled company. There were also seasonal refreshments on offer as well which were most welcome.

The second meeting of the season, held on November 2nd, was an interesting disection and discussion of Wordsworth's 'The Prelude' and Tennyson's 'In Memoriam' presented most ably by Pamela Woof. She read a number of passages and discussed the context and reasoning that led to that particular piece of writing. A most interesting and informative evening.

The first meeting, on October 5th, was a presentation by the Dorian Players entitled "Racketts, Dumps and Brawls" during which they played a number of  instruments from the Tudor and Stuart periods. There were no Shawms or Serpents but there were Crumhorns, Gemshorns and a Hurdy Gurdy to name but three. We were royally entertained to an evening of music, song and history. If you get the chance to hear the Dorian Players do go along, they are highly recommended.
