Sea defence work starts

A £200,000 scheme to improve sea defences at a railway station begins on Monday.

The project will see about 100 metres of rock barriers placed as sea defences north of the station in Kirkby.

Keith Lumley, regional press officer for Network Rail, which is carrying out the work, says the improvements are essential as the tide regularly comes within one metre of the track.

The work will be carried out between 10pm and 7am each weekday between Monday and July 7.

Mr Lumley said: “Unfortunately work needs to be done when the trains aren’t running, there might be a bit of noise during these hours but it should not be too bad.”

Residents in Marshside have received letters asking them to ensure their vehicles are kept off the road to allow access for deliveries of equipment to a temporary compound near the station.

Mr Lumley said deliveries were due once every couple of days while the work was in progress.

Parish Councillor William Todd said residents should co-operate with the request.

He said: “Network Rail have been polite enough to put letters through doors but people are still leaving their cars on the road.

“There has already been one delay at the bottleneck when an HGV struggled to get through.”
