Teacher taking over role of head at village school

A POPULAR teacher is preparing to step into her first role as head.
Sarah Powell, who is deputy head at St Mary’s School in Dalton, will take the helm at Burlington School, in Kirkby, in September.
Mrs Powell, 38, grew up in Ulverston. She has been at St Mary’s for six years and teaches Year 2 pupils at the school.
The mum-of-two qualified as a teacher in 1995 and started her career in Darlington before moving back to Cumbria.
She said: “I am delighted and excited about the opportunity to work with such dedicated staff and wonderful children.
“Of course, I’m sorry to leave St Mary’s where I’ve taught and been deputy head for the past six years.
“They are two very different schools with different challenges – this school has 200 pupils and Burlington has 62.
“I was taken in by the warmth of the children and the staff. I’m looking forward to it.”
Burlington School headteacher Jan Bath retires in July after 10 years at the school.
Mrs Bath, who has been in education for 34 years, began her teaching career working part time at Broughton C of E Primary School and Coniston C of E Primary School. She has also worked as deputy headteacher at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School and acting head at St Patrick’s RC Primary School in Workington.
She said: “Sarah is a very lucky woman.
“She’s taking over a school that’s not only outstanding in Ofsted but has very supportive parents, a governing body and a wonderful staff.
“My time here has been wonderful – it’s been a good way to finish my career.
“I started teaching in village schools and that’s what I’ve come back to.
“I have very happy memories.
“I’m sure Sarah will be great.”
